Accessibility Statement

Our commitment to an accessible museum website, and how to report a barrier.

Our commitment

The National Video Game History Museum is committed to making our website usable by everyone, including visitors who use assistive technology such as screen readers, screen magnifiers, voice recognition software, or keyboard-only navigation.

Standard we target

We work toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, the standard most commonly referenced by the U.S. Department of Justice and courts when evaluating website accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

What we've done

We've reviewed this website against WCAG 2.1 AA and made a number of improvements, including:

  • Adding descriptive text alternatives to images and icon-only links
  • Adding a "skip to main content" link for keyboard users
  • Improving color contrast throughout the site so text is easier to read
  • Adding visible keyboard focus indicators
  • Fixing broken link markup in the site footer
  • Removing duplicate/dead links so screen reader and keyboard users aren't sent to the same place twice in a row
  • Labeling page regions (navigation, main content, footer) for assistive technology

Known limitations

Accessibility is an ongoing effort, not a one-time fix. Our museum gallery, in particular, contains many historical photographs; while each has a text description, a number of them currently share the same description because they depict the same piece of equipment from different angles. We're working on giving each photo its own distinct description over time.

Feedback

If you encounter a barrier while using this website, please let us know. We take reports seriously and will do our best to address the issue promptly. You can reach us using the phone number and email address in the footer at the bottom of this page.
